The Trine and Gunnar Kjems collection

The art at Mayfair Hotel Tunneln is the private collection of Trine and Gunnar Kjems, placed throughout the hotel’s rooms and common spaces. With more than 300 original works it is one of Malmö’s largest hotel art collections. Presented here is a selection – some sixty of the artists whose works hang in the building – with an emphasis on Nordic, and especially Danish, contemporary art, alongside established international names and a few modernist classics.

Dear Guest,

Through many years, we have had a great joy in looking at good art. We would love to share that joy with our guests, and we have therefore placed some of our paintings and sculptures at the hotel.

In connection with this, short descriptions of the most important artworks have been written. Furthermore, there are books and brochures available for those who want to know more. Enjoy!

With kind regards, Trine and Gunnar Kjems Text: Kathrine Børlit Nielsen

Themes in the collection

Painting as material

Several artists explore the physical, tactile side of the canvas – thick paint, reliefs and visible brushwork (Lars Dan, Ivan Andersen, Nicola Samorì).

Humanity and nature

Climate and landscape are central to many works, from Icelandic nature to climate awareness (Olafur Eliasson, Claudia Comte, Fie Norsker).

Ceramics and sculpture

A strong presence of three-dimensional work – from glazed porcelain to casts in silver, bronze and silicone (Louise Hindsgavl, Nicolai Howalt, Pipin Henderson, Roland Persson).

The digital meets painting

Internet aesthetics, virtual reality and pixel culture woven into the painted (Rachel Rossin, Ida Kvetny, Amanda Lydért).

Nordic modernism and surrealism

Historical roots in CoBrA, constructivism and Danish surrealism (Corneille, Robert Jacobsen, Rita Kernn-Larsen, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen).
